Accused Northwoods burglars waive hearings

HOUGHTON — Two former Finlandia University students accused of stealing guns from the Northwoods Trading Post sporting goods store in Hancock in December waived arraignments scheduled for Monday, which allowed them to avoid making an appearance Houghton County Circuit Court.

Jake Hugall, 19, and Juan Pereyra, 18, each face charges of breaking and entering with intent, a 10-year felony, and larceny of a firearm, a five-year felony.

They stood mute on the charges, which is treated as the equivalent of a not guilty plea.

Police arrested Pereyra and Alexander Santiago, 18, about 12 hours after the incident. Hugall later turned himself in to the police.

Finlandia security found three semi-automatic .40-caliber pistols in a dorm room matching the serial numbers of the stolen guns. There were also two boxes of ammunition.

The district court preliminary hearing for Santiago was continued for a later date last week. Santiago faces identical charges.
