HOUGHTON — The Houghton County board of Commissioners approved a $9.56 million budget for the 2018 fiscal year at its meeting Tuesday.

The budget has $9,565,860 in budgeted revenues in the general fund versus $9,562,887 in expenditures, leaving a $32,000 budget surplus.

“This budget doesn’t change much year to year,” said Administrator Eric Forsberg.

Forsberg said about two-thirds of the budget was wages and benefits. About 20 percent of that goes to transfers out, such as office supplies and attorneys, Forsberg said.

About 2 percent goes to discretionary spending. Items in this year’s budget include replacing a county car, two copiers and other office equipment.

The budget added a $5,000 raise for Forsberg, in keeping with the recommendations of the board’s personnel committee.

There was no public comment at a public hearing on the budget before the meeting.
