Sled crash: Driver suffers serious injury

GRANT TOWNSHIP — A 28-year-old female from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, sustaineded serious injuries Wednesday in a single-vehicle snowmobile accident in Grant Township, according to Keweenaw County Sheriff Bill Luokkanen.

The accident occurred on Trail 134 at about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, two miles west of Trail 132.

The driver of the snowmobile, whose name has not been released, was proceeding south along the trail when she failed to negotiate a curve, lost control of the snowmobile and exited the trail.

The snowmobile became airborne, and the driver was ejected from the vehicle before striking a tree.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital by Mercy Ambulance, according to a release.

The Sheriff’s Office did not release the name of the victim pending notification of family, said Undersheriff Curt Pennala.

“Usually it’s because it’s the family needs to be notified, and it’s touch and go,” Pennala said, “so it’s our policy that we don’t release names in these instances.” Pennala said her name will be released in the near future.

Sheriff Bill Luokkanen said as of 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, he had no update on the driver’s condition or any additional details, but the accident is still under investigation.

Luokkanen said speed is believed to be a factor, but alcohol did not appear to be a factor.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Ahmeek village Off Road Rescue Unit, Grant Township and Lac La Belle Medical first responders.
