CHASSELL TOWNSHIP — At least one person was killed in a four-vehicle crash in Chassell Township Saturday morning.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. near Sturgeon River Road. The tanker overturned and its cab left the roadway.

The Department of Environmental Quality and US Coast Guard Station Portage responded to mitigate the hazard from a fuel spill, said Cody Carlson, a trooper with the Michigan State Police Post Calumet. Michigan Department of Transportation was also on scene to examine damage to the guardrail.

The remainder of the fuel in the 9,000-gallon tank were being offloaded so the tank could be moved. After that, investigators could begin piecing together the scene, Carlson said.

Traffic was closed on U.S. 41 through the early afternoon.
