Snowmobiler dies from Jan. 17 crash

EAGLE RIVER — A 27-year-old female involved in a single-vehicle snowmobile personal injury accident Jan. 17 in Grant Township in Keweenaw County died Monday of injuries sustained in the crash, according to the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

On Thursday, Keweenaw County Undersheriff Curt Pennala identified the female as Julie Mentink, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Mentink was southbound on the trail when she failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the snowmobile, which ran off the trail. The snowmobile became airborne, and Mentink was ejected from the machine before striking a tree, according to a press release issued by the Sheriff’s Office on the day of the crash.

According to Sheriff William Luokkanen, alcohol was not a factor in the accident, which occurred on Trail 134 in Grant Township. However, excessive speed was a factor, he said.

Mentink sustained serious injuries and was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium by Mercy Ambulance.

Pennala said that she was subsequently transported to UP Health Systems-Marquette hospital before being transported to another hospital out of the area, where she died.

Pennala did not know the name or location of that hospital.
