No injuries in Chassell blaze

Kali Katerberg/Daily Mining Gazette Firefighters use water brought in by Otter Lake and Hurontown fire departments to douse a chimney fire in Chassell.

CHASSELL — Firefighters responded to a house fire on Pike River Road Thursday night around 7:15 p.m.

The fire began in the chimney and moved up through the walls but was ultimately contained to a single wall of the home. No injuries were reported.

A resident’s quick use of a fire extinguisher and another extinguisher from the first firefighter to arrive on the scene helped contain the fire, explained Frank Cherubini from the Chassell Township Fire Department.

“It held it down,” he said. “(When) we pulled up, smoke was coming out of every window.”

Once the fire was doused the firefighters began checking for hotspots that could potentially restart the fire.

The majority of the damage to the home was from smoke and water. The residents were on scene and will be staying with family they told the Daily Mining Gazette.

Funds from Pigs N’ Heat will go to the residents of the home to help them replace clothes and toiletries, firefighters reported.

The Hurontown and Otter Lake fire departments were on scene providing additional water, as well as Mercy EMS, the Michigan State Police and REA power company.
