US?41 closure disrupts school

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette Traffic was flowing near the Baraga bend of US 41 by 10 a.m. Thursday after one person was killed and one person severely injured earlier in the morning at the southern end of Keweenaw Bay.

A deadly crash occurred Thursday on U.S. 41 in Baraga County at about 6:15 a.m., according to the Baraga County Sheriff’s Office.

The highway was closed for several hours between Menge Creek Road and Plains Cutoff Road.

The accident site was at the southern end of Keweenaw Bay.

The crash resulted in one fatality and one person in critical condition.

No further details are available as of Thursday morning. Michigan State Police referred inquiries to the Baraga County Sheriff’s Office.

About 25 students and several staff members of L’Anse Public Schools (LAS) were unable to get to school this morning due to the highway’s closure, according to LAS superintendent Susan Tollefson.

“Baraga has been gracious in letting us house them in their gym,” she said.

Baraga Area Schools (BAS) also fed them breakfast.

Staff at LAS have been shifted to cover for the staff members with the students still in Baraga until U.S. 41 reopens.

The sheriff’s office estimated the highway would reopen by 11 a.m.
