Closing Time: Council OKs land deal with Meijer

HOUGHTON — Meijer is coming closer to a Houghton store.

Houghton City Council unanimously authorized Mayor Bob Backon to sign closing documents for Jan. 23 for the sale to Meijer of a 10-acre parcel.

Meijer will pay the appraised value of $200,000 for the land, located on M-26 and West Sharon Avenue.

Meijer first purchased a land option for the property in April.

In November, Houghton and Portage Township also finalized an agreement for a 7.5-acre parcel in the township.

Under the agreement, Houghton would determine zoning on the parcel, and provide all services but sewer. Portage Township would receive 3 mills of property tax, with Houghton receiving the rest.
