$72K fine, no jail time for bar worker

EAGLE RIVER — A Baraga woman must pay more than $70,000 in restitution after being sentenced Wednesday for embezzling from the bar where she formerly worked.

Kelly Tapani, 44, was sentenced to five years probation and $71,991 in restitution in Keweenaw County Circuit Court.

Tapani was arrested in March 2018 after an investigation of several months by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

Tapani took the money over a five-month period while working at the Vansville Bar in Phoenix.

She was charged with embezzlement – $50,000 or more but less than $100,000, a 15-year felony. She had originally faced 10 other felony charges prior to pleading no contest in January.
