PELKIE — A number of vehicles were damaged by a partial roof collapse at a building at the Baraga County Fairgrounds in Pelkie Friday.

The collapse happened sometime late Friday afternoon, said Gale Eilola, president of the Baraga County Fair Board.

The building dates to the 1960s.

“Of course, we’ve had all this ice and rain and warming, the whole nine yards,” he said. “I guess it got to be too much for the roof.”

The building hosts exhibits and vendors during the fair, Eilola said.

About 20 RVs are stored in the building during the winter, he said.

The building is insured, Eilola said. However, each individual has to have their own insurance on the vehicle.

No one was in the building at the time, Eilola said. The building had been snowbound at the time, with snow halfway up the main doors, he said.

“I don’t dare go in there, because I don’t know if something else is going to collapse,” he said.

Eilola estimated the earliest the county would be able to repair the damage was late April or early May. There is no cost estimate yet.

Eilola said people should be patient and stay away from the site until directed.

“It’s an unsafe area,” he said. “We’ll get in touch with them if their vehicle or RV has been damaged.”
