The Michigan Technological University Music Department is notorious for their festivals and concerts, and have an abundance of annual events, many of them filled with music.

It is currently the time of year for the Don Keranen Memorial Concert.

The annual Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Concert is celebrating 50 Years Of Great Jazz At Michigan Tech – The Gold Standard.

Current jazz studies director at Michigan Technological University, Mike Irish, said, “Don originated the Jazz Lab Band in 1967, and since then, it has grown into one of the most respected non-major jazz programs in the country.”

Irish said all performances in the concert are in his memory. The memorial jazz concert has more than 50 participants and two guest artists, Steve Zenz on drums and Mike Christianson on trombone. Featured ensembles include the Research & Development Big Band, the Jazz Lab Band, and the Alumni Jazz Lab Band.

The Alumni Jazz Lab Band first debuted in 1992, and are excited to be making a return in 2017.

The Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Concert is 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Rozsa Center. Tickets for the event are on sale now and are $22 for adults, $6 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee.
