Investigation wrapping up

BAD AXE, Mich. – The investigation into the death of Michigan Technological University student Nathan C. Hayden is nearing completion.

Hayden, a native of Kalkaska, was fatally struck by a vehicle in December while working as a flagman on a road work site. At the time of his death, he was a civil engineering major, and working on an internship with Soil and Materials Engineers in Bay City, according to his obituary.

At the time of the accident, the Huron County Sheriff’s office issued a release saying that preliminary investigation indicated that Hayden was struck by a GMC pickup driven by Dale C. Peyerk, 58, of Bad Axe at approximately 10:38 a.m. Dec. 4. According to the release, Hayden, 21, was standing next to a flashing arrow sign in the eastbound lane of M-142 when he was struck, flying through the air more than 75 feet before landing near a guardrail on the opposite side of the road. He later died at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. The release stated that Peyerk was “apparently uninjured.” Accident investigators remained at the scene, and the road was closed for “several hours.” The release also called for witnesses who hadn’t spoken with deputies already to contact the sheriff’s office.

Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson said his office is currently awaiting toxicology results, and there may be supplemental information from an accident reconstructionist. Once the results are complete, the case will be sent to the Huron County prosecutor’s office.

“There’s really not much left before it goes to the prosecutor’s office,” he said.

Funeral services for Hayden were held Dec. 11.
