Grant aids Lake Linden industrial arts students

LAKE LINDEN – Building materials just keep getting more expensive. So when Lake Linden-Hubbell High School industrial arts teacher Jason Erva found a way to offset the costs of his program, he leapt at it.

The class put the finishing touches Friday on a mini-garage built through a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education $5,000 grant for tools and building materials. Each year, students construct buildings, such as this year’s mini-garage, which are then sold to community members. This year’s buyer is Superior Sales & Service.

“With schools, and funding or anything extra, it’s so hard right now,” Erva said. “$5,000 – my entire budget for the year is that much. And to sell the buildings is getting harder, so this grant can supplement or offset some of the excess cost.”

The garage took about $3,000 in building materials. The rest of the money went toward equipment upgrades, such as a framing gun and a trim nailer, Erva said.

Students in the industrial arts class said it had been beneficial.

“It teaches you how to do some simple jobs so you can do some stuff on your own instead of having to call somebody every time,” said student Gavin Jeffrey.
