Ontonagon extends water agreement

ONTONAGON – The Ontonagon Village Council extended a water agreement by 10 years with White Pine Electric Company Monday.

“White Pine Electric (wants) rights to raw water for the term of the power plant’s life, as licensed,” said Village Manager Joseph Erickson. “It’s so they can continue water usage – to coincide with their licensing.”

The agreement allows the company to draw a maximum of 35,000,000 gallons daily of raw (untreated) water from the village system to the plant for cooling purposes until 2032, instead of 2022.

“White Pine has decommissioned and completely replaced or will decommission and completely replace (and properly dispose of) the current polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) electric transformer, primary switch, and secondary switchgear at the pumping station with the new transformer and related equipment,” the agreement says, estimating the new transformer to cost $500,000.

Village Attorney Teddy Baird, who replaced Kevin Maki last month, reviewed the agreement, at his fee of $125 an hour.
