Scholarships awarded earlier

LAKE LINDEN – Students in Lake Linden-Hubbell High Schools’ Early College program who received scholarships will now be able to receive them upon graduating.

The district board of education made the change at Monday’s monthly board meeting. Previously, students were unable to receive the scholarship money until the completion of the fifth year of the program – their first year of college – during which they take classes through Gogebic Community College.

The original idea was that the scholarship wasn’t needed during the fifth year, as students wouldn’t have expenses, said Superintendent Craig Sundblad. However, he said, students will incur some tuition and book expenses, as well as transporting themselves.

“We’re just trying to have some flexibility here,” he said. “As we go, we’re trying to modify it to what fits.”

The district has had an early college agreement with Gogebic since the start of the 2014-15 school year. The three-year program begins during their junior year of high school.
