District asks for bond, bus levy

ONTONAGON – Ontonagon Area School District will ask voters to support a bond proposal and millage issue on the November 8 ballot.

If passed, the bond proposal would levy one-half mill over seven years for the district to purchase four new buses.

The millage rate for Ontonagon Township residents will decline slightly, while Carp Lake Township residents will pay a little bit more until spring 2018, when residents in both townships will pay the same rate.

District residents pay 2.1 mills now. If the millage rate passes, the rate will go down to about 2 mills for the next 10 years.

Superintendent and Principal Jim Bobula told the board money from the millage would fund many upgrades, including the heating system, restrooms, security systems, football field and parking lot.

“Hopefully, if the voters pass this millage, we’ll be able to get these things done,” he said.

School Board President Dean Juntunen said the revenue-generating measures might help the district keep staff who might otherwise be laid off to balance the budget in future years.
