Little Brothers name volunteer of year

HOUGHTON – Dave Geisler makes a personal connection to every elderly person he meets,” said Carol Korpela, program director for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.

“He caters to them above and beyond our requirements,” Korpela said. “He’s always so accommodating. He’ll serve the elderly community outside of the Little Brothers family, especially when, with our limited resources, we sometime have to tell an elderly friend, ‘I’m sorry, we can’t help you.’ … this volunteer will say, ‘I can probably help them out.'”

Geisler was named Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly Volunteer of the year at its annual banquet Wednesday.

Geisler, who has been with Little Brothers for five years, was also praised for his filling a staff vacancy for a lengthy time before it could be filleed.

“It’s never been work,” he said. “It’s been a pleasure to do bookkeeping, and I love the elderly that I have. One of the ladies I drive I refer to as my ‘cranky old lady.’ It’s a great honor, and 100 percent unexpected.”

Volunteers were also recognized for length of service. Abbey and Chris Green received a 25-year award. Receiving the 20-year award were: Dala and John Beard, David Crowley, Stephy and Bob Franke and Nancy and Bill Johnson. The 15-year volunteers were: Marlene Houle, Jean Jackson, Marie Kangas, Ed Kautto and Deb Stouffer, Barb and Ozzie Koski, Bill Lassi and Doris Veldhuis, Rita Moilanen, Barb and Phil Quenzi and Sharon Turovaara. Recognized for 10 years of volunteering were: Phyllis and Jay Green, Kristie Heinonen, Patty and Michael Lydon, Kathleen and Jeff Mell, Sue Slinde, Dave Wiitanen and Dan Verbanac.
