Shooting Homicide

LAURIUM – The Laurium Police Department is investigating a shooting homicide in the village Saturday resulting in the death of a woman.

According to a written statement from the Laurium Police Department, officers received a call of the shooting at 11:46 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Florida Street.

When the police arrived, a 44-year-old woman was found dead in the side yard of the residence with an apparent gun shot wound. A 32-year-old male was in the house at the time and he was taken into custody.

It’s unknown now if there were any other people in the house at the time of the shooting. There are no reports of other injuries resulting from the incident.

Although the Laurium Police Department would not confirm the name of the victim or suspect, other local media have reported the victim as Kim Bess, and the alleged shooter was her brother, Christian Kitti.

Police would not confirm any more details other than what was in a statement released Sunday.

The shooter is expected to be arraigned today in 97th District Court.

Assisting at the scene were troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet and Wakefield posts, the Marquette and Grayling crime labs, the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Linden Police Department, the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office and Mercy Ambulance.
