Mountain Lions raise $8,000 for skiing

ONTONAGON — A recent fundraising raffle by the Mountain Lions of the Greenland/Mass City area raised more than $8, 000.

The raffle was for a Polaris ATV that was donated to the service club by Pat’s Motorsports of Greenland.

The club’s fundraising effort will benefit local and national non-profit charities.  The club’s major project is renovating the former Adventure Mountain Ski Hill, along with improving the Ontonagon County Fair.

The club’s raffle was a joint project with the Ontonagon County Fair Board.  The Mountain Lions and the Greenland Township Planning Commission have applied for a $45,000 Michigan Department of Natural Resources Recreation Passport Grant.

The improvements include rebuilding the rope tow at the ski hill, along with building horse stables near the current horse arena.

The Mountain Lions agreed last night to host a Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers (MASTERS) Snow Drag on March 11.  The last two years, the MASTERS ran snowmobile races on the former ski hill.  The Snowmobile Drag races will take place next to the ORV Mud Drag course, on the west side of the horse arena.

John Meade of Blanchardville, WI won the ATV.  Meade purchased the winning raffle ticket during this past summer’s Ontonagon County Fair.  Meade is involved in the Antique Engine Association, which has been a part of the Ontonagon County Fair for many years.

The Mountain Lions plans on running a raffle next year.
