Fatal Crash: Head-on collision kills Chassell man

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP — A 21-year-old Chassell resident was killed Monday from injuries sustained in a head-on traffic collision on M-26 near Coal Dock Road, according to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim was the driver of a 2002 Honda Accord that hit a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 63-year-old male from Dollar Bay. The victim and a 21-year-old female passenger “were ejected from the vehicle and sustained significant injuries,” according to police.

The two were first taken to Aspirus Keweenaw hospital in Laurium, then later flown to Aspirus Wausau hospital, where the driver died due to his extensive injuries, police said.

The condition of the passenger was unknown as of Tuesday morning.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department was not reporting the identities of any of the people involved as of Tuesday morning. The accident remains under investigation.

Names are not being released pending family notification, a spokesman from the Sheriff’s Department said. Names will be released as soon as possible.

Hurontown Fire Department responders used the jaws of life to remove the driver of the pickup truck. He and two passengers, a 61-year-old woman and 34-year-old man from Dollar Bay  were transported by Mercy Ambulance to Aspirus Keweenaw hospital, with the female later transported to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment of her injuries, police said.

A third passenger in the pickup, a 6-year-old boy from Dollar Bay, was uninjured in the crash.
