State police welcome new trooper

Oliver

CALUMET — Trooper Michael Oliver has been at the Michigan State Police post for only two weeks, but he said he likes the area despite it being covered in snow.

“I think it’s beautiful,” he said.

Oliver, who started at the Calumet post on Dec. 27, said he graduated from the MSP Trooper Recruit School in Lansing on Dec. 22.

An Alpena, Michigan native, Oliver said his father was in various MSP posts around Michigan until retiring from the Alpena post after 20 years in the agency. His father’s experience influenced his decision to join the MSP.

“That was always what I wanted to do,” he said.

Before joining the MSP academy, Oliver said he worked about one year on the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office.

In the two weeks he’s been at the Calumet post, Oliver said he’s been getting used to MSP procedures and he’s gone out on road patrol riding with another trooper.

“I’m really interested in learning the job,” he said.

Oliver said his Field Training Officer program will last 20 weeks, after which he’ll be evaluated to determine if he can move forward in the job, or if he’ll need further training.

“After that (20 weeks) I’ll have a review,” he said.

Oliver said already he’s interacted with other law enforcement agencies in the MSP Calumet post coverage area. He’s enjoyed the people with whom he’s had contact.

“I’m excited to be up here,” he said.
