Board talks student activities

ONTONAGON — The School Board discussed a wide variety of educational opportunities for its students at its meeting Monday.

Tim Nelson gave a presentation of the students that went to Washington D.C. during the Presidential Inauguration. The student’s first stop was at Arlington National Cemetery. The students saw the memorial for the Space Shuttle Challenger, visited the gravesite of President John F Kennedy, and went to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Other stops on the students visit to Washington D.C included the Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial and the Pentagon Memorial from 9-11.

“The students went to Mount Vernon. They had the chance to touch the same hand rail that George Washington touched,” commented Nelson.

Nelson informed the school board about Inauguration Day at the Capital Building.

“Our trip included visits to the Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, and Smithsonian Museum of American History, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and the Vietnam War Memorial. They were informed about the 57, 989 names on the wall. One student’s Great-Uncle’s name was on the wall, she took a picture of it,” explained Nelson. “The students were happy they went. It’s an experience I will never forget,” concluded Nelson.

In addition to the educational experience the students had in Washington D.C., the students raised much of the money on their own for the trip explained Nelson.

Superintendent Jim Bobula talked about the ‘farm to school program,’ of which the district will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Feb 22nd. A report was given where the students had a chance to eat Squash. As a part of the diverse educational opportunities at the Ontonagon School, students took part in Snowmobile Safety, and the Strong Dental Clinic staff educated K-3rd grade students on dental hygiene.

Ontonagon area schools will be hosting a job fair on Friday March 24th. Employers from central and western Upper Peninsula will be present. The job fair will first open up to juniors and seniors from the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District. This will be from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm ET. Then the job fair will be open for the general public from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm ET.

There will also be a Career Exploration Day at Gogebic Community College. This will be on Feb 23rd for 8th and 11th grade students.

“Our 4th and 5th graders also had a fun winter recreation day at the Porkies Ski Hill on Feb 10th,” commented Bobula.

Bobula explained this summer’s Driver Education Program. After the Board approved the hiring of Charles Zielinski and Bruce Amos as instructors, Bobula explained the cost and what the program is contingent on. “The program is contingent on student enrollment. The cost to each in-district student will be $350 for segment I and $50 for segment II,” explained Bobula. The rate for out-of-district students will be $425 for segment I and $50 for segment II. “A non-refundable deposit of $50 will be required prior to the first classroom session in order for the student to participate in the program.”

The January/February general fund invoices totaled $32,108.35. The board approved the February general fund invoices in the amount of $72, 325.89.
