Houghton transfers building inspection duties to county

HOUGHTON — Joining the rest of Houghton County, the city of Houghton is moving building inspection administration and enforcement over to the county.

The Houghton City Council approved an ordinance authorizing the transfer Wednesday.

“The City of Houghton has been doing its own building inspection for many, many years,” City Manager Eric Waara said. “We’re probably the last holdout in the whole county.”

The ordinance primarily covers construction; the city would still handle the inspections of rental properties and International Property Maintenance Code issues. Waara said he would be meeting with an attorney to review possible upcoming changes to that.

Upon council approval, the handover goes to the state Bureau of Construction Codes, which would have to approve the transfer.
