Still time to get Camp Josh Banquet tickets

HOUGHTON — There is still time to get tickets for the annual Camp Josh Banquet and Gun Raffle on Saturday.

“We have room for about 30 more,” said J.R. Richardson, one of the Camp Josh board members, speaking about Saturday evening’s fundraiser: a prime rib dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Konteka in White Pine. Cocktails and raffles start at 5 p.m.

“We have 15 guns, a fishing trip, Pictured Rocks and Apostle Island Boat rides, a generator, wood carvings, wood clocks, saw blade art, birdseye maple cribbage boards, Ted Nugent signed arrows and hats, U.P. White Tail’s garb, and it’s all for a great cause,” Richardson said.

Donations are welcome anytime for Camp Josh, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing recreational opportunities and education to people with disabilities focused on hunting, fishing and the camp itself, located off the L.P. Walsh Road on 40 acres near the Cranberry River, west of Ontonagon. The camp was inspired by and named in honor of Josh Bader, a young man who learned to love outdoor recreation despite spending his short life in a wheelchair.

In addition to ongoing events, the funds will support other improvements slated for the camp.

“New projects for this year are to increase paving for access to the ponds and deer plots, and redesign the fish pond,” Richardson said.

Dinner tickets cost $50 each or $90 for a couple. Debit cards can be purchased early with check or credit card: Pay $100 for a debit card and get $140 in tickets or pay $200 for $300 worth of tickets, in addition to dinner.

Sponsorship of the event costs $250 and nets the donor two dinner tickets. Everyone in attendance will have the chance to win the door prize, a Ruger .22 rifle.

In addition to Nugent, donations came from American Transmission Company, Pat’s Motor Sports, Steve Sport’s Shop, John Cherro, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Aspirus U.P., U.P. White Tails Association, Dave Radovich, Nature’s Way Birdseye Connection’s Dave Stimac, Sub Terra and PM Power Group, Midge Axley, Tom Colgin, Apostle Island and Picture Rock cruises, Rick Bernier Taxidermy and Ontonagon Herald Publisher and Editor Maureen Guzek.
