Hancock death probe continues

HANCOCK — Hancock Police responded to a 911 call at 1036 Summit Street, where they found an unresponsive female lying on the bathroom floor, according to a press release. The call occurred at approximately 11:10 p.m. Monday night.

Upon finding the 23-year-old woman, officers immediately began CPR, until Mercy Ambulance personnel arrived, the release stated.

The female was transported by ambulance to UP Health System-Portage Hospital on Campus Drive, where she was later pronounced dead.

Notification of the female’s mother was made by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, the release stated. The victim’s parents are Keweenaw County residents, said Hancock Police Lt. Jerry Hiltunen.

Hancock Police Chief Wayne Butler said the name of the victim is being withheld for a number of reasons.

“Her name is being withheld pending an investigation,” Butler said. “And while we know some of her family has been notified, we don’t if any more of her family has been.”

Butler said an exact cause of death is pending results of an autopsy of the victim at UP Health System-Portage.
