CALUMET — The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce held its monthly After Hours event at the Calumet Family Health Center Thursday, where people were offered a tour of the of new facility.

The clinic is the new home to the UP Health Systems – Portage Clinic, and the Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center (UGL), both of which used to have offices in neighboring suites in the strip mall near Shopko in Calumet.

Will Schuett, marketing and physician relations and industry specialist for UP Health Systems – Portage, said both the facilities had outgrown their old locations and needed additional space.

“The two facilities were getting to a point where the patient volume was increasing steadily,” Schuett said, “and they could no longer keep up with the spaces in the old location, and so that’s where the idea of this was born.”

Not only were the two organizations outgrowing their offices, but their locations were inconvenient to visiting patients.

“They were separated by literally one space,” Schuett said, “so rather than have patients walk out one door, past one door, and over to walk into the next door, it just made sense to be all under one roof.”

Schuett said many people are confused by the facility arrangement, but the UGL and Portage Health are two separate entities. They are just both simply under one roof. The building is divided equally between the two entities.

“We all have the same vested interest in terms of helping the patient,” he said. “If the patient comes in and needs help, we’re not going to turn them down. So, whether it is they need to see a primary care physician or a dentist, or they might go to a primary care physician, then find out they need to see a rehab specialist. They have it all at one location where we can actually help them out.”
