Lake Trout Classic starting Friday

ONTONAGON — The 11th Annual Lake Trout Classic will take place this weekend in Ontonagon. The event starts Friday with the Ladies Powder Puff Tourney running from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Lake Trout Classic runs on Saturday and Sunday.

“The first Lake Trout Classic started in 2005 with 40 teams participating,” commented event organizer, Larry Grieg. “It has been growing ever since.” Grieg is with Greig’s Taxidermy and Archery Pro Shop.

The “Pre-tournament,” sponsored by Keweenaw Chevrolet, will run on Friday from 6 p.m. to 2 p.m. The major sponsor of the tournament is Aspirus-Ontonagon Hospital,, Grieg said. All proceeds go to the Ontonagon County Cancer Association.

“This tournament has been a benefit for the County Cancer Association from the beginning,” Grieg said.

The Powder Puff Tourney on Friday is sponsored by Moonshine Lures. There will be a Barbeque for Life Cook-off on Saturday. They will be serving beef, chicken, and whitefish. Adults will be $15, kids 11-16 will be $5, and under 11 will be free.

The event has garnered support from businesses throughout the region through cash prizes in different fish categories. This includes largest lake trout, largest lake trout caught by a lady, largest coho salmon, largest brown trout, largest chinook salmon, and largest steelhead.

Grieg thanked Ontonagon County Telephone Company, Shamrock Bar, Coca Cola of Hancock, UP Sport Fisherman’s Association, Peterson’s Chalet Cottages, Ontonagon Valley Sportsman’s Club, AmericInn of Silver City, Superior Shores Resort, and Copper Country Ford,

The awards presentation will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Ontonagon Marina. Top prize is $1200, second is $600, and third is $400. “Prizes are paid down to eighth place,” Grieg said.

The event draws people from all over the Midwest and businesses throughout Ontonagon have seen the economic impact this event has on the community.
