Accidents cause injuries, confusion
Two crashes in Portage Township occur on M-26 within minutes
PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — Two accidents occurred at nearly the same time in Portage Township Thursday afternoon, causing injuries as well as much confusion among law enforcement agencies. Both crashes occurred within the road construction zone along the M-26 corridor between the Yooper Loop and Green Acres Road.
At 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched to M-26 and Green Acres Road to investigate a two-vehicle personal injury accident.
“The accident occurred on M-26 and Green Acres Road,” Sgt. Russell Larson of the Michigan State Police Calumet Post said. “One car making a left turn failed to yield the right-of-way, resulting in injuries to one of the parties.” Larson said more details on the crash will be available sometime Friday afternoon.
Officers of the Houghton Police Department were dispatched to assist troopers at the accident and were enroute when another crash occurred on M-26 near Hardee’s and the B&B Bar at 4:20 p.m. That crash involved three vehicles.
“We got dispatched to go assist at the accident at Festival Foods,” said Polly Salmi, office manager of the Houghton Police Department. “On the way there, another accident happened, there were no injuries (reported) at the Hardee’s accident. We were on our way to assist the state. We had to take the Hardee’s.”
Because of radio traffic generated by both accidents occurring at nearly the same time, Larson said there was some confusion among agencies in trying to determine exactly what happened at what time and where. Further details regarding the crash the troopers responded to should be available by Friday afternoon, he said.
No officers from the Houghton Police Department were available at press time this morning to offer further details of the crash near Hardees.
