Local veterans association to hold thank-you picnic Sat. for veterans
CHASSELL TOWNSHIP — The Copper Country Veterans Association has scheduled its annual picnic for Saturday at the Chassell pavilion, according to Jim Pintar of the CCVA of South Range.
Social hours with light snacks will begin at 2 p.m. and a full-course steak dinner will be served from 5-5:30 p.m.
“We have keg beer,” Pintar said, plus “wine, limited liquor, vodka, gin, brandy, whiskey and rum. We’ll also have soft drinks, diet and regular Pepsi, Coke and 7-Up.”
The picnic is a way of saying “thank you” to the veterans for all their volunteer hours providing military rites “to our deceased veterans,” Bill Cole, CCVA president said.
Veterans, their spouses and or guests are cordially invited to the annual picnic, Cole said.
The CCVA consists of all the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Marine Corps League organizations located in the Copper Country.
The primary mission of the CCVA is to provide military rites to deceased veterans.
“They currently do about 50 funerals a year,” Cole said. “These men give freely of their time and receive no remuneration. As a small thank you, using the donations received, we have annual picnic for all those who participated in providing military (rites). If we have remaining funds, we purchase a few prizes and conduct a door prize raffle.”
Pintar asks that veterans wishing to attend respond no later than August 7. If no response is received, Pintar said, a meal cannot be guaranteed. A charge of $20 for extra guests will cover that guest’s meal.
