ONTONAGON — There will soon be changing faces in Ontonagon county leadership positions.

On Tuesday, the County Board of Commissioners was surprised to hear Vicki White announce her plan to retire from her role as county transit director. After just under 27 years in the position, White intends to have her replacement ready by early 2018.

“I believe our purpose in life is to help where we can and we are supposed to serve. Serving the residents of Ontonagon county through the division of public transportation allowed me to work with purpose. So I want to thank you for that opportunity,” White said.

The board thanked White for her years of “exceptional service,” noting her professionalism and quality work as something they had come to rely on.

For other positions, the terms for multiple positions are expiring at the end of the year. With that in mind applicants are asked to send a brief letter detailing why they wish to serve on a board of commission by Dec. 13.

The board is looking to fill positions for the EDC Board, Ontonagon County Planning Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services Board, Western UP Plan & Development, Ontonagon County Library Board, Substance Abuse Agency Board, Forestry Commission and Brownfield Authority.

The board is now looking for an additional applicant for a new commissioner after the recent passing of Commissioner David Nykanen. This appointee would fill the District 3 vacancy serving Stannard and Rockland townships.

Now may be the time for interested community members to serve the community as a board or committee member.
