‘Lights of Love’ kicks off Thursday

The holiday season is the best time to reflect and give. The annual Lights of Love program put on by the Portage Health Ladies Auxiliary is quickly approaching. The program will kick off the holiday season by allowing people to honor family members and friends with a tree lighting on Dec. 7 at 10:30 a.m. It will take place in the lobby of the UP Health System Portage.

Stop by the Guilded Rose gift shop in the hospital lobby to donate and list the name(s) of the person to be honored. The donation is $5 for each name for the light lit in their honor, but there’s no limit for the donation amount.

Along with each light, the names of each honored person will be inscribed on a banner that will hang in the lobby during the event and throughout the holiday. Each name will also be read at the ceremony.

Donations are not only for remembrance, but to fund the education of the next generation health professionals.

“The donations received will go to funding of post-secondary scholarships for students in the medical field,” said Auxiliary member Nancy Fenton.

To be eligible to receive a scholarship, students must be from the counties of Baraga, Houghton Keweenaw, or Ottonagan.

The event is open for all to come and enjoy.

“Refreshments are always served afterward and there will be music as well,” said Fenton. A live musical guest will be in attendance.
