Searching for a new home: Dollar General looks for new places to open stores in Ontonagon County

Skip Schulze/For the Gazette Dollar General is looking at opening stores in Ontonagon and Bruce Crossing, but the corporation denies reports it has committed to opening a store in Ontonagon.

ONTONAGON — The rumor mill had Dollar General opening a new store in the village and a store in Bruce Crossing.

While it still could happen, it is not a done deal, according to Angela Petkovic from Dollar General corporate offices.

At the Aug. 28, 2017, Ontonagon Village Council meeting, Village Manager Joe Erickson reported that Dollar General permits had been filed.

The report indicated one of the country’s fastest-growing small box discount retailers had already committed to locating a new store in Ontonagon.

“At this time, we are currently in due diligence phase for two new Dollar General locations in Ontonagon (County), Michigan,” Petkovic told the Daily Mining Gazette.

The store in Ontonagon would be located off Heard Street, and the Bruce Crossing store would be located off Highway M-28.

“This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add new stores in the area, but we have not committed to doing so just yet,” she said.

According to Petkovic, the timeline for a decision is this spring for the Ontonagon location and this summer for the Bruce Crossing location.

As to what prompted Dollar General to look at adding two new stores in Ontonagon County, Petkovic stated that meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority.

“The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice,” she said. “We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions, as we generally serve customers within a 3-to-5-mile radius, or 10-minute drive.”

Other factors according to Petkovic are demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns.

The stores would employ between 6 and 10 employees.

“This is depending on the individual needs of the store,” Petkovic said.

Currently, Dollar General has stores in Calumet and Wakefield. She said Dollar General’s stores will have quality name-brand and private-brand merchandise — health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, seasonal items and basic clothing.

“We also sell an assortment of packaged foods, as well as some refrigerated foods and frozen foods,” she said. “In addition to high-quality private brands, Dollar General sells products from America’s most-trusted brands such as Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Unilever, Kellogg’s, General Mills, Nabisco, Hanes, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola.”

In 2017, Family Dollar opened a new store in Ontonagon.
