New Portage CEO to be named soon

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette Roy Vinson, interim CEO of UP Health Systems — Portage, talks about the search for a new CEO at Wednesday's Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance meeting.

HANCOCK — A new CEO at UP Health System – Portage hospital could be hired soon, the interim CEO said.

Speaking at Wednesday’s Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance meeting, interim CEO Roy Vinson said two candidates have been interviewed.

The top candidate, a resident of New York, is looking for a safer place to raise his family, Vinson said.

“This is the best place I’ve found since living in Maine,” he said.

The candidate has one more interview with the chief executive officer and chief operating operator of LifePoint in Brentwood.

“Then we’ll put the hard pressure on him to accept our offer,” Vinson said. “That’s probably a week or two out.”

The CEO position has been vacant since August, when Jeff Lang left UP Health System after two years.

Portage also interviewed a candidate for its vacant chief financial officer position a couple of weeks ago.

“We want the CEO to be hired first, and the CFO after that,” Vinson said.
