Library resolution passed by Portage Town. Board

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — At their Monday meeting, the board of trustees discussed possible soccer fields, introduced a new deputy treasurer and approved a new library resolution.

The Portage Lake District Library (PLDL) agreement must be revisited when there is a change to municipalities. The agreement was reworked following Chassell’s withdrawal from the PLDL system and millage.

Changes centered around PLDL board makeup, adding an additional member for the City of Houghton to the board. With the change, there are four members from the city and three from Portage Township, Dillon Geshel, library director, explained.

Asset distribution in case of library closure was altered to give assets to both municipalities. A simplification from the previous resolution, Geshel said.

“Assets would be split between the districts because a district library can’t exist without two or more entities,” Geshel said.

The board unanimously voted to sign the new resolution into effect.

Later in the meeting Portage Township supervisor, Bruce Petersen proposed looking into getting DNR funding for soccer fields in the area. Space near the Hurontown recreational area was proposed for four such fields along with another location.

The project would require a 25-75 match, provided the township can keep the purchase under a certain threshold, as it would then be funded by the DNR, Petersen explained.

The trick, according to Petersen, would be making sure they didn’t overpay and have to make up the difference of a lower state appraisal on the property, he continued.

The board unanimously voted to proceed with the possibility.

In other news a new deputy treasurer, Karen Jakovic, was introduced at the meeting.

Additionally, the purchase of jackets for the fire department was proposed to be paid for by the township.
