Houghton OKs Portage Cove lighting

HOUGHTON — Portage Cove is about to become brighter.

The Houghton City Council approved $64,520 for additional street lighting, which was bid out to Erico Electric of Hancock.

Erico was the lowest of three bidders, with another being rejected for an incomplete bid. The amount covers a base bid of $38,160. Because work will happen close to the start of next year’s budget, the bid also included a second phase of four light poles for $6,590 each.

“We can use the power — no pun intended — of project to get two years worth of work done,” said City Manager Eric Waara.

After that work, only one phase will remain, he said. The city’s capital improvement plan lists $10,000 each in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

“Then we can check that thing off the capital improvement list,” Waara said.
