Arson, larceny of vehicle suspected in Copper City

COPPER CITY — Arson and larceny are suspected in the case of a truck found smoldering without wheels and tires near Copper City Saturday morning.

A passerby spotted the vehicle partly on fire and smoldering about 9:20 a.m. Saturday on a two-track road about one mile north of Copper City Road, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. The passerby called 911 immediately.

The 2000 Chevy Silverado was parked at a party spot known as the “Sugar Bowl,” the sheriff’s office said.

The owner told deputies he had run out of gas while attending a party there the previous night and had to leave the truck there.

Prior to the fire, the suspect or suspects took the truck’s wheels, tires and license plate. The wheels are original Chevrolet; the brand of tires is unknown.

The vehicle suffered extensive damage in the fire and was a total loss, the sheriff’s office said.

The Ahmeek Fire Department, Calumet Township Fire Department and Joe’s Towing assisted at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 482-0055.
