Planning Commission OKs site plan, lot split

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette Houghton City Manager Eric Waara, right, discusses the site plan for a UPS garage during the Planning Commission meeting Tuesday meeting as Planning Commission members Kristine Bradof and Tom Merz look at the plan.

HOUGHTON — The Houghton Planning Commission approved a site plan for an additional garage at UPS’s property at its meeting Wednesday.

City Manager Eric Waara said UPS planned to use the space for storage and vehicles. The property is zoned for industrial use.

“They’re not looking to add any occupancy to this building,” he said. “It’s just a big site where they want to get some more indoor space.”

No additional utilities would be needed for the site. For stormwater measures, Waara said, UPS planned to direct the drainage towards a retention pond onsite.

“The retention pond is sized for the addition itself,” he said.

Safety and security lighting will be put on the side of the building.

The commission also approved sending a lot split at 713 West Jacker Street to the city council. Donald and Carol Kreher own the property, which is zoned R-1.

“This split would put them each on their own lot, which would give them some flexibility for a sale,” Waara said.

The split lot would still meet zoning requirements for size, Waara said. Both would also exceed the 10-foot side-yard requirements.

A potential new owner would either strike a deal with the other lot owner for the driveway or build their own, Waara said.
