Skate park still coming this year: To be on Houghton Waterfront

HOUGHTON — The Houghton Skate Park is still on target to open this year.

City Manager Eric Waara said at Wednesday’s City Council he had reviewed and approved the 90 percent drawings for the concrete park, which will be located at the East Houghton Waterfront Park. They will now look to schedule a start date.

“Yes, we’ve got a short time, but they’re scheduled to start it before theoretical winter,” he said.

The park’s fundraising campaign has raised more than $200,000, including $50,000 matches from the Tony Hawk Foundation and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Groundbreaking had originally been scheduled for earlier this summer.

The Houghton City Council selected Spohn Ranch Skateparks of Los Angeles to design the park in October. The firm also designed the park in Marquette, the first concrete park in the Upper Peninsula.

The designers came to Houghton in February for a design workshop to get local skaters’ ideas for features they wanted in the park.
