Council candidate focused on ideas, volunteering

Photo provided to the Daily Mining Gazette Robert “Skip” Schulz, who spends his time volunteering in the community, is running for the Ontonagon Village Council.

ONTONAGON — Robert “Skip” Schulz began calling the village his home in 1990. Since his arrival, he has been volunteering his time and ideas, which is something he’d like to see more of.

Schulz is on the Nov. 6 ballot for the Village Council. He has a long history of serving in local government and supporting local developments particularly in the area of ORVs.

He currently serves on the DNR Western UP Citizens’ Advisory Council, the Ontonagon County Economic Development Corporation Board and the North Country Snowmobile Club.

Past experience includes serving on the Ontonagon County Board, Michigan Off-Road Vehicle Advisor Committee and other organizations.

Schulz, an avid snowmobiler, also founded the Upper Peninsula ORV Trail Development Association.

Schulz describes himself as an idea person, noting that although many are not successful, they do not all have to hit the target.

“I’d rather try and fail than fail to try,” Schulz said.

He would like to see more new ideas proposed and more volunteer efforts.

“I believe strongly in getting involved in the community,” he said, noting he would like to see more people doing so outside of elected office and working from the ground level.

Rather than creating more ordinances and fines, Schulz would like to see more assistance and volunteers tackle problems of village blight.

He also proposes the village create a monthly citizen award to honor those having a positive impact in the community.

Schulz also suggests naming new streets and parks after the numerous local Vietnam veterans.

He has also long been looking into the possibility of a water bottling plant in the area.

Another key issue for Schulz is civility and respect during the public comment portion of council meetings, something he sees as lacking.

Even if not elected, Schulz pledged to continue his effort to better Ontonagon in his other roles and as a local level volunteer.
