Flood-damaged gym floor replaced at Hancock Middle School
HANCOCK — The new gym floor in the middle school was completed during the holiday break and was ready for use when the students returned to classes on Jan. 2. The floor has been welcomed by the entire school, according to Principal Ezekiel Ohan.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for all my middle schoolers to exert all the energies that they’ve missed,” said Ohan. “They’ve been very patient.”
He said the students enjoy their own space without having to come into the high school.
Ohan said the floor was completed in a very short time, approximately four weeks from the time the contractors sealed the concrete pad to the final coat of sealant of the top floor.
“The contractors were very good. They were very expeditious,” said Ohan. “I mean, I’m not an NBA player, but that’s a nice floor.”
The newly designed bulldog logo is also in the center of the floor, Ohan said.
“We’ve gotten many, many compliments from kids,” Ohan said.
Ohan credited Superintendent Kipp Beaudoin with moving quickly to get the project moving forward, and to the building maintenance personnel for providing the window of opportunity for the project to be completed quickly, as well as the the athletic director for overseeing the project.
The gym floor was damaged beyond repair during the June 17, 2018, flood, in which rain water was forced up through the concrete, lifting the sub-floor and the top-floor.
Beaudoin said the school’s insurance covered the floor’s replacement.
