UP Health opens Express Care facility in Calumet
UP Health Systems has opened a new Express Care location in Calumet. The location shares 56720 Calumet Avenue with Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center and Rehab and Sports Medicine.
The facility is staffed by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant and radiology technician.
The Express Care locations in Houghton and Calumet offer services for injuries and illnesses that may not be emergencies but also should not be delayed in treatment. These services include those which are available at the Houghton Express Care as well as an X-ray machine and an X-ray technician, which is not available at the Houghton Express Care. This allows patients to be tested for things like limb injuries as well as chest conditions which can show up on X-ray, such as pneumonia.
“To seek that type of treatment you’d have to go to the emergency room and/or schedule an appointment with your primary care physician and might not be able to get one in until a week or two or three later,” said Guy Pellegrini, a physician assistant who works at Express Care.
Most of these services are covered by a flat rate of $55, though some tests and services including X-rays come with an additional fee. Practitioners are up-front and open about these fees and most of them are covered by most insurance plans.
The Calumet Express Care does not yet have the operating hours of Houghton Express Care, but its current operating hours are designed to maximize its utility.
“The hours of the clinic are specifically Saturday, Sunday, Monday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., so a lot of it is that access to care on the weekends and then on Mondays as well when primary care is typically really busy from everything that came in over the weekend or hasn’t been able to be seen,” said Angela Luskin, health and fitness manager at UPHS-Portage hospital. Part of Luskin’s role is helping to manage both the Houghton and Calumet Express Care locations.
“On the weekend it [was] pretty much either the emergency department or Express Care in Houghton which is, especially lately, frequently full. We wanted to add another point of care that can see patients and in addition can see extremity patients that require X-rays,” said Dr. Tara Robinette, emergency department medical director at the hospital. “If the demand continues in the area to provide more services we have the ability and the desire to open more days of the week.”
