Earl H. Junttonen

PAINESDALE – Earl H. Junttonen, 77, of Painesdale, died on Sunday, January 5, 2014, at the Miller Dwan Medical center in Duluth, Minn.

He was born in Painesdale, on June 2, 1936, a son of the late Waino and Irene (Alaniva) Junttonen. He spent his youth in Painesdale and attended the Adams Township schools.

Earl was employed as a certified welder, first working at American Motors in Kenosha, Wis. He then went to work in Baraga for Art Maki’s Shop, who did work for Pettibone. For 13 years he was employed at the Copper Range Machine Shop in Painesdale, and then moved to Green Bay, Wis., where he worked for 12 years at Grace Tec Systems in DePere, retiring in April 1999.

On June 10, 1961, he was married to the former Mary A. Trasti in Hancock.

Earl was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving two tours of duty, the first from 1956 to 1958, and his second tour from 1961 to 1963 as a helicopter mechanic.

He was a life member of the Keweenaw Detachment 1016 Marine Corps League, was an active member of the Copper Country Veteran’s Association, and drove the DAV van to the VA hospital in Iron Mt. Earl was a proud grandpa and always looked forward to attending his grandsons’ football and hockey sporting events.

Surviving are his wife, Mary of Painesdale; a daughter, Colleen (Steve) Suhonen of Ahmeek; a son, Gregory Junttonen of Oahu, Hawaii; three grandsons, Emmett (Hope) Heine of Iron Mountain, Steven and Joshua Suhonen of Ahmeek; one brother and three sisters, Lois (Wester) Rintala of Tapiola, Laurian (Ronald) Osantowski of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Vernon (Donna) Harju of Grand Rapids, Mich., Neldine Smith of West Bend, Wis.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and good friends, Bill and Rita Seiler.

Besides his parents, Earl was also preceded in death by a sister, Violet Kuusisto; and a brother, Calvin Junttonen.

A memorial service with military rites will be held in the spring at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Pastor Chuck Bylkas to officiate.

A date and time will be announced at a later date.
