Edmund “Eppa” Hiltunen

SOUTH RANGE – Edmund “Eppa” R. Hiltunen, 77, a resident of South Range, died Thursday, April 14, 2016, at UP Health System-Marquette, with his family by his side.

He was born December 25, 1938, in Nisula. He was the son of the late Harvey and Senia (Hill) Hiltunen.

On June 12, 1965, he married the former Frances M. Katalin in Painesdale. Frances passed away February 5, 2015.

Eppa began working for UPPCO in July of 1964, and after 36 years with the company, he retired in December of 2000.

Eppa was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of South Range and IBEW Local 510. He coached Little League baseball in the South Range area and played hardball for Toivola. He also played hockey for many years and bowled in the Copper Bowl Men’s League.

In his spare time, Eppa enjoyed tinkering in his garage. He was a talented woodworker and could make anything from cabinets to baseboards. If someone needed something, he was always willing to make it for them. He was also an avid bird and deer hunter and looked forward to spending time at his hunting camp with his buddies. Eppa was a fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Tigers and Lions.

Surviving are his daughter, Sara (Ron) Outinen of South Range; son, Danny Hiltunen of Painesdale; granddaughter, Amber Outinen; twin grandsons, Christopher and Alex Outinen; a brother, Rusty Hiltunen of Howard, South Dakota; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.

Besides his parents and wife, Eppa was also preceded in death by a sister, Alice; and brothers, Willard, Halo, Melvin and Arnold.

Eppa loved his three grandchildren. He and Frances were proud of their grandkids’ athletic skills and enjoyed attending their games and supporting their sporting events.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Grace Lutheran Church in South Range, with Pastor Sally Wilke to officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.

Spring burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.
