Ruth LaPointe Sheehan

SOUTH RANGE – Ruth LaPointe Sheehan, 87, daughter of Selma (Kujala) Hayrynen and step-daughter of Jacob Hayrynen, died peacefully Sunday, May 8, 2016, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

Ruth was born on May 12, 1928, in Toivola. She attended the Toivola Grade School and graduated from Hancock Central High School with the class of 1946.

Following graduation, Ruth worked for Vulcan Corporation in Donken.

She married Fred LaPointe from Baltic and three children were born of that union, Joan, Denise and Michael (Gloria). Fred predeceased her in death in 1995.

On October 26, 2002, Ruth married Bernard Sheehan. They enjoyed traveling and visiting with friends and family. Bernard predeceased her in death in 2007.

Ruth is survived by her children; four grandchildren, Amy, Sarah (T.J.), Christopher and Melissa; two great-grandchildren, Adeline and Ruby; four sisters-in-law, Laverne Hayrynen, Doris Hayrynen, Jacqueline LaPointe and Shirley Sheehan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Selma and Jacob Hayrynen and Eric Kerttu; husbands, Fred and Bernard; six brothers and five sisters, Carl (Aili) Hayrynen, William (Linda) Hayrynen, Jacob Hayrynen, Roy (Marge) Hayrynen, Paul Hayrynen, Douglas Hayrynen, Martha (Edwin) Kotajarvi, Elma (Charles) Kemppa, Edna (Gordon) Lorasch, Betty (Charles) Palmer and Eva (Ray) Marullo.

Ruth was a member of Holy Family Parish of South Range and a life member of Ranger Post 6165 VFW Auxiliary of South Range.

Ruth was blessed with a long life, filled with many friends. She had a great love for her family and she enjoyed cooking for them, working in her garden and spending time at her summer cottage at Lake Gerald.

The family is grateful to Fr. John Martignon for his presence and prayers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2016, at Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range, with Rev. Fr. John Martignon as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2016, at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2016, in the church.

A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the mortuary followed by a time of reflection. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Parish in Ruth’s memory.
