Margaret Elaine Markham
HOUGHTON CANAL — Margaret Elaine Markham, 76, a former resident of Houghton Canal, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, November 16, 2016, at the Winona House of Portage Pointe in Hancock, where she had been a resident for four years.
She was born on November 22, 1939, in Liminga, a daughter of the late Hjalmer and Hilda (Seppala) Anderson. Margie attended the Liminga and Redridge schools and was the 1957 class valedictorian of Houghton High School.
On December 12, 1959, she was united in marriage to James Penrose Markham. The couple resided on the Houghton Canal where they raised 13 children. On February 7, 2013, Jim preceded Margie in death.
In her younger years Margie worked for the Probate Court in Houghton, where she enjoyed working with Judge Donnelly. She also worked at numerous elections for Stanton Township.
Mrs. Markham was a lifelong member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church, where she played the organ for many years.
Margie thoroughly loved visiting people wherever she went. You most often found her sitting at sporting events cheering for her children and grandchildren.
She had a love of words, whether it was a good scrabble game, crossword puzzle or cryptogram. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She had a generous spirit and would give whatever she had to another.
Margie and Jim always had boats and she loved to invite family and friends to join them for a troll along the Portage Canal or to Isle Royale. Margie’s home was open to everyone and she was known for saying, “There’s always room for one more.”
Also preceding her in death were step-father, Leo Niemi; brothers, Reino Anderson and Melvin Anderson; son-in-law, Glenn Peterson; sister-in-law, Eleanor Anderson; brother-in-law, Art Maki; and four nephews.
Surviving are her children, Patty Peterson of Hancock, Timothy and Diane Markham of Greer, South Carolina, Jane and Paul Hietala of Houghton Canal, Beth and Russell Ryynanen of Houghton Canal, Todd and Lisa Markham of Oscar, Jeffrey and Monica Markham of Chassell, Joan and Dale Kero of Hancock, Corey and Mandy Markham of Houghton, Jamey and Liddy Markham of Houghton Canal, Crystal and Jim Pietila of Howell, Nicholas and Julie Markham of Ishpeming, Ryan and Karmen Markham of Atlantic Mine, Rodney and Joanne Markham of Houghton Canal; 78 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; her brother, Marvin (Margaret) Anderson of Boston Location ; her sisters, Mildred Maki of Hancock, Helen (Peter) Kinnunen of Atlantic Mine, Louise (Milton) Erva of Houghton Canal; her sister-in-law, Shirley Anderson of Houghton Canal and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Margie will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton, with David Taivalkoski to officiate. Burial will be in the Oskar Cemetery at a later time.
Friends may call on Friday, November 18, 2016, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton and on Saturday, November 19, 2016, from 3 p.m. until the time of services at the church.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to the Omega House of Houghton.
