John H. ‘Jack’ Schutz

HANCOCK — John H. “Jack” Schutz, 58, a former Houghton resident, died Sunday, September 3, 2017, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, after a long struggle with multiple sclerosis. He had been a resident patient at the facility for the past 21 years.

He was born September 28, 1958, in Hancock, a son of the late Howard J. and Antonia (Klarich) Schutz.

Jack was a 1976 graduate of the Houghton High School, where he played on the high school hockey team and the golf team.

He was formally employed at McGann’s in Hancock, and as a light equipment operator with the City of Houghton, retiring due to ill health.

Jack was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton. He enjoyed watching sports on television, playing cards and prior to his illness he enjoyed golfing. Jack loved his family and especially looked forward to spending time with his children.

Jack is survived by two sons, Brandon of Grand Rapids, and Anthony of Hancock; a daughter, Jaclyn of Hancock; one grandson, Ashton; five sisters, Janet (Fred) Raffaelli of Houghton, Kathy (Gordon) Sellers of L’Anse, Cheryl (Chuck) Paoli of Hancock, Sandy (Bruce) Maki of Trimountain, and Amy (Jay) Olson of Houghton; as well as aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, Jack was also preceded in death by a nephew, Todd Raffaelli.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for the wonderful care given to Jack over the years.

The family would also like to thank John Erickson for his support and friendship to John (Jack) throughout his life.

A private memorial service will be held for immediate and extended family on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, with Fr. John Martignon to officiate. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
