Bernard R. Schmalzel

CALUMET — Bernard R. Schmalzel, 94, a lifelong resident of Calumet passed away on, Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

He was born on September 30, 1932, in Calumet, the son of the late John & Anna (Zunich) Schmalzel, and was a graduate of Calumet High School with the Class of 1942.

Bernard was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church of Calumet. He was employed by the Houghton County Road Commission; he worked out of the Tamarack Garage as a driver for 40 years, retiring in October, 1988. He was a former member of International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 328.

Bernard enjoyed hunting, fishing and long walks around Calumet where he would visit with people. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed repairing watches.

He is survived by three nephews, one great-nephew, seven greatnieces, eight great-great-nephews, and eight great-great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Schmalzel; sisters, Anna Clancy and Bernice Fink; brothers, John and Rudolph Schmalzel.

Burial will take place in the spring in the Lake View Cemetery of Calumet. A committal service will be held at the graveside.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.
