Edward Francis Sirard

BARAGA — Edward Francis Sirard, 73, of Baraga, died on Saturday, November 25, 2017, in Athens, Georgia, surrounded by his children and grandchildren following a battle with cancer.

Edward was born in Hancock, on May 22, 1944, the son of the late Osman Sirard and Lou Emblad Sirard.

He graduated from L’Anse High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University. Ed was a physical education teacher, coach of football, basketball, track, and athletic director at L’Anse High School which spanned a period of 36 years, ultimately retiring in 2003. Ed was inducted in the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame.

Ed operated with his family the Sirard Brothers Maple Syrup tradition at his camp residence in Baraga. When Ed was not attending or watching sports he enjoyed vegetable gardening, family with prime rib dinners and friends.

Ed attended both Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L’Anse and St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Baraga.

He is survived by a daughter, Jane Christensen and husband, Mark of Greensboro, Georgia; son, Paul Sirard of Auburn Hills; sister, Annette Schaefer of Dollar Bay; two brothers, Al Sirard and wife, Barbara of L’Anse, and Joe Sirard and wife, Betty of Watersmeet; four grandchildren, Zander Christensen (8), Beckett Christensen (5), Aven Christensen (5), Braden Sirard (5); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding him in death are his sister, Emmy Roy; brother-in-laws, Paul Roy and John Schaefer; and a brother, Miles Sirard.

A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, December 4, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L’Anse, with Father Corey Litzner officiating. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. until time for the service at the church. There will be a luncheon in the Church Hall following the service.
