Jean B. Asunmaa

CALUMET — Jean B. Asunmaa, 88, of Calumet passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at the Lighthouse in Hancock, where she had resided since November 2016.

Jean, the daughter of Peter Kilpela and Genevieve Palo, was born in Calumet on August 14, 1929. She grew up in Fulton location where she met and married Waino Asunmaa on September 17, 1946.

Jean loved to bowl and knit but her biggest joy was garage sales, where you could find her at the front of the line. Winters were spent in Gulf Shores, Alabama for several years where she enjoyed picking shells and going to the casino.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Donald; and husband, Waino Asunmaa.

Surviving are her daughters, Donna (Robert) Shea of Calumet, and Denise (Jerome) Spagnotti of Calumet; son, Daryl Asunmaa of Centennial Heights; grandchildren, Scott Karrio of Allouez, Jillian (Jason) Isaacson of Ft Meyers, Florida, and Jerome Spagnotti of Kalamazoo; great-grandchild, Logan Karrio of Allouez; sister-in-law, Jean Belkonen of Houghton; and aunt, Jenny Mukka of the Lighthouse in Hancock.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at Lighthouse in Hancock who took such good care of her as well as her physician, Dr. Sigurds Janners.

At the request of the deceased there will be no visitation. A private family gathering will take place at a later time in Big Betsy.
