Steven C. Kela

DOLLAR BAY — Steven C. Kela, 64, passed away on January 3, 2018, at his home in Dollar Bay.

He was born to Arthur and Arlene (Linja) Kela on March 15, 1953, in Hancock.

He attended the Hancock public schools, graduating as co-valedictorian of his class in 1971. After graduation, he moved to Kalamazoo, where he attended Kalamazoo College.

He was married to Sally Calvert in Kalamazoo, and after seven years, they parted ways as friends.

Steve resided in Kalamazoo for 26 years and held many managerial positions and made numerous friends. He was a very kind and generous mad and enjoyed spending time with family on his regular visits back home, always making time for his nieces and nephews, who remember him as the “fun uncle.”

Steve was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, following the team faithfully since childhood, and attended several games. He was also devoted to the Detroit Lions and the Michigan State Spartans basketball and football teams.

He moved back to the Copper Country in 1997 due to his father’s ailing health and to be near his family. He gained employment at Econo Foods in Houghton as a bookkeeper, retiring in 2016 after 20 years of service.

His greatest joy in life was caring for and being with his beloved cats, and as Steve desired, was able to stay at home with them until his passing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Kela; and a niece, Mandy Kela.

He is survived by his mother, Arlene Kela of Boston Location; brothers, Robert Kela of Pontiac Road, Mark (Susan) Kela and Scott (Cindy) Kela, both of Boston Location; sisters, Cheryl Kela of Boston Location and Cindy (Walter) Mytty of Houghton; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins; and special friends, Jake and Dan.

The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with arrangements. As requested, cremation has taken place and private family services will be held at a later date.

“Remember me as I was.”
